TODAY I BRING YOU THE THEME OF "MURALISM" that I have just written for my blog on my web site more at. https://angelartmx.com
What is Muralism?
Murals are paintings made directly on the wall, wall or ceiling of a building.
It can also be painted on some other large support, such as ceramic, aluminum plates and wood, which are mounted on the wall.
Muralism is essentially defined as humanist since it proposes to incorporate art as a component of the integrated urban space in an art project for all. It aims to rethink the importance of the city in relation to the environment, of the inhabitant with his surroundings and of culture as an expression of a social identity. Integrating art into the collective space of urban man is to allow him social access to artistic expressions that reaffirm him as a subject in the search for a better quality of life. It is to recognize man as responsible for the construction and care of the city that contains him, inhabitant of an urban space that, as a proposal, enriches the communication and memory of the men who build it as an identity.
Muralism in Mexico
Mexico is one of the countries that has stood out since 1921 in the world of muralism without underestimating other countries such as Italy with its exquisite long-lasting fresco paintings, however there were already painted walls of great inspiration such as the cave paintings of the first inhabitants. of the land Egyptian painting, pre-Hispanic painting etc.
Muralism is an artistic movement of an indigenist nature, which emerged after the Mexican Revolution of 1910 in accordance with a program aimed at socializing art, and which rejects traditional easel painting, as well as any other work from intellectual circles.
The promoter of this movement was José Vasconcelos, philosopher and first Secretary of Public Education of Mexico, who asked a group of young liberal artists to capture on the walls of the National Preparatory School in Mexico City
It proposes the production of monumental works for the people in which the Mexican reality, social struggles and other aspects of its history are portrayed. Mexican muralism was one of the most decisive phenomena of contemporary Ibero-American art and its main protagonists were.
David Alfaro Siqueiros, José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, Olga Costa, Javier Chávez Morado, Devora Arango, Gerardo Murillo, Juan O Gorman, Jorge Gonzales Camarera, Rufino Tamayo etc. Starting in 1930, the movement became internationalized and spread to other countries in the Americas.
The muralist movement can be divided into three stages: the decade of the 1920s; that of the 1930s and the period from 1940 to 1955. However, the making of murals continued and in 1964 the largest number of painted works was registered, but with other themes and techniques.
What types of murals are there?
Mural art is closely related to architecture, depending on it, not only in its conservation, but also in its visual consideration. Traditionally, the original technique of Renaissance mural painting has been fresco and its variants in fresh or dry medium, and relief can be done with mosaic or ceramics.
Today
The objective is to rethink the construction where the social space recovers its protagonism, where the street is the connector between the public and the private and where the public space is an element of structural encounter that gives back to man the social access to the expressions of art. that have restricted it, captive in galleries and museums or in the public offer that implements the aesthetics of the market.
graffiti and muralism
They are two semi-related artistic expressions. Both are forms of art with an obvious social commitment and for this reason it is common to find murals and graffiti in degraded urban spaces. We must remember that graffiti was born in the 1970s in the Bronx, a neighborhood in New York in which conflictive situations have historically been experienced. Despite certain similarities between graffiti and muralism, they are two different manifestations. The former employs intense colors and a territorial street language and writing style, while the latter has a decorative intent and a didactic function.
Muiralism today with new colors and improved materials continue to impact the world with new proposals.
